Change of Firmware Version Numbers

Omada devices, including gateways, switches, and access points, use firmware version numbers in the following format: x.y.z

Previously, the version number indicated the sequence of the firmware and hardware.

As Omada devices are designed to work with the Omada Controller, and firmware releases are planned in unison with controller releases, the firmware version numbering rule will change: x.y now represents the controller version that the firmware fully adapts to, and z still indicates the sequence of the firmware.

For example, firmware 6.4.0 is fully adapted to Omada Controller V6.4. Therefore, you may notice that the firmware version of a device jumps from a small number (e.g., 1.0.25) to a large one (e.g., 6.4.0). This is not an error or a downgrade but the result of the new numbering rule, which makes the controller adaptation level visible at a glance.

About Fully Adapted Controller Version

Every Omada device firmware declares a fully adapted controller version, which is identical to the first two segments of its firmware version number. For example, firmware 6.4.0 is fully adapted to Omada Controller V6.4.

The Omada Controller acts as the central manager that deploys configurations to your devices. Fully adapted to Controller V6.4 means that all relevant features on Controller V6.4 are ensured to work properly in conjunction with this device firmware. In other words, it indicates the highest controller version level that this firmware has been fully adapted to, rather than a minimum requirement.

Note that being fully adapted to an Omada Controller version does not mean earlier Omada Controller versions cannot manage the device. Features provided on earlier controller versions are also fully supported. As devices and controllers are released on separate schedules, a device firmware may be released before its fully adapted controller version is available. For example, a switch may release firmware 6.4.0 while the latest controller version is still V6.3. This is normal, and the device can still be adopted and managed by the earlier controller version; all related features on earlier controller versions can be used with this firmware version.

One exception applies to brand-new device models: an earlier Omada Controller version may not support a newly released model at all, and therefore cannot manage it. In this case, upgrade the Omada Controller to a version that supports the model.

Conversely, when the Omada Controller version is ahead of the device firmware, some features configured on the controller may not take effect on the device. For example, if the controller has been upgraded to V6.4 while a switch still runs the firmware fully adapted to V6.3, the new features introduced in V6.4 will not work on this switch until its firmware fully adapted to V6.4 is released and installed. In this case, wait for the corresponding device firmware and then upgrade the device.
