Objective

URL Filtering is used to allow or block access to specific URLs. You can configure different policies to control the access to some known websites. This article introduces how to configure URL Filtering on Omada APs via Omada Controller.

Requirements

  • Omada AP
  • Omada Controller (software Controller / hardware Controller / Cloud-Based Controller, v5.7 and above)

Introduction

Browsing websites is an important way for us to quickly obtain information in our work and life. However, the internet itself is not safe. While internet resources bring us convenience, they also bring potential threats such as network security and personal information theft, which have a negative impact on our work and life.

  • Spending a lot of time on social media, videos, and other non-work-related websites during work hours can significantly reduce employee’s work efficiency, consume network bandwidth, and even pose risks of accessing illegal websites, violating laws.
  • Access to unhealthy websites in public institutions like schools and libraries may bring bad impacts on young students and may also violate regulations.
  • Accidentally visiting malicious or phishing websites can lead to the leakage of the business secrets or personal information, and even bring threats like viruses and malware attacks.

Therefore, it is essential to control network access. URL Filtering is one of the methods to address these issues, as it helps restrict web access by limiting users' access to specific URLs.

Configuration

For example, a school provides a Wi-Fi network for students, and the administrator wants to block students from accessing Google and YouTube. Follow the steps below to configure the URL Filtering feature to meet the requirement.

Step 1. Log in to the Omada Controller, go to Settings > Wireless Networks > WLAN, and set the SSID for students to connect to the network.

The location to configure the SSID on the Controller webpage.

Step 2. Go to Settings > Network Security > URL Filtering > EAP Rules to configure URL Filtering. As the figure shown below, a teacher rule has been configured, you can click the Edit or Delete button to modify or delete the rule.

The position to create EAP Rules, and the position to edit or delete the rule profile.

Step 3. Click Create New Rule to create a rule. Give a name to identify the rule. In this example, set the policy to Deny and the students cannot access the added URLs. If Permit is selected, it means the students can access the added URLs. Then, select the SSID previously created so that students can apply the rule.

Binding rule to SSID, enable this rule and the policy chose Deny.

Step 4. In the URL Path, add the URLs. In this example, enter www.google.com and www.youtube.com, then click Create to apply the settings. Now the clients connected to the SSID (for students) will be unable to access Google and YouTube.

Input your URL, using google and youtube as example.

Conclusion

You have now successfully configured URL Filtering on the Omada AP.
