Introduction
Omada provides multiple controller solutions to meet different network sizes, deployment environments, management models, and operational requirements. These solutions are grouped into three categories: On-Premises Controllers, Omada Cloud-Based Controllers, and Integrated Gateways. Although they all provide centralized management for compatible Omada networking devices, they differ in controller location, required infrastructure, maintenance responsibility, management scale, supported features, and cost structure. Omada Cloud-Based Controller and Omada Fusion Series can also provide integrated video management system (VMS) capabilities for unified networking and surveillance management.
This article first compares the available solutions, then explains their management architectures, and finally provides selection guidance to help you choose the most suitable Omada Controller for your network.

2. Management Architectures
The comparison table above provides an overview of the available Omada Controller solutions. To help interpret the differences in deployment and operation, this section explains the management architecture of the three controller categories: On-Premises Controller (Hybrid Cloud), Omada Cloud-Based Controller, and Integrated Gateway.
2.1 On-Premises Controller (Hybrid Cloud)
With an On-Premises Controller, the controller is deployed and managed within the organization's own environment. It may be a dedicated Omada Hardware Controller or Omada Software Controller running on a customer-managed server, virtual machine, private data center, or private cloud. Managed gateways, switches, and access points communicate directly with the controller through the local network or another reachable Layer 3 network.
Administrators can access the controller locally. Optional Cloud Access can also be enabled for remote management through the Omada Cloud Portal or Omada App, creating a hybrid management model. Cloud Access provides remote entry and centralized portal visibility, but the controller service, configurations, logs, and core management functions remain on customer-managed hardware or infrastructure.
This architecture provides greater control over controller placement, network data, storage, backups, access policies, and system availability. Most controller-based deployments can continue local management when internet access is unavailable. In return, the organization is responsible for controller deployment, updates, backups, availability, security, and capacity planning. A Hardware Controller reduces server deployment work, while a Software Controller requires the organization to provide and maintain the host environment.

2.2 Cloud-Based Controller
With an Omada Cloud-Based Controller, the controller service is hosted and maintained on a vendor-hosted cloud platform. Instead of connecting to a local controller, managed devices securely communicate with the cloud platform over the internet. No controller appliance, customer-managed server, or virtual machine is required at the deployment site.
Administrators access the network through a web-based portal or mobile app from virtually anywhere with internet access. Omada manages the underlying controller infrastructure, platform scaling, maintenance, security patches, and platform updates, reducing the deployment and operational workload for local IT teams. Because the controller is cloud-hosted, management access depends on internet connectivity.
Omada Cloud Standard and Omada Cloud Essentials use this architecture. Cloud Standard provides more comprehensive functions for professional, large-scale, and MSP deployments, while Cloud Essentials provides free, simplified management for less complex environments and does not support MSP Mode. In addition to networking management, both solutions support integrated VMS capabilities for centralized management of compatible networking and surveillance devices through the cloud platform.

2.3 Integrated Gateway (Hybrid Cloud)
An Integrated Gateway combines gateway and controller functions in a single device. The built-in controller centrally manages compatible networking and surveillance devices at the site, eliminating the need for a separate Hardware Controller, Software Controller, or Cloud-Based Controller.
The controller service runs locally on the Integrated Gateway. Administrators can manage the network locally, and Cloud Access is also supported for remote management. Therefore, an Integrated Gateway can provide both on-premises management and cloud access while remaining different from an Omada Cloud-Based Controller.
Omada Fusion Gateways combine gateway, controller, and VMS functions to deliver unified management of compatible networking and surveillance devices from a single platform. Certain Fusion models also feature built-in PoE ports, allowing compatible powered devices to connect directly to the gateway. Fusion Gateways support Cloud Access and SD-WAN. By comparison, ER7212PC integrates gateway, controller, and PoE switching in one device and supports Cloud Access as well, but it is designed for a smaller management scale and does not support SD-WAN or VMS.

Note: Cloud Access and a Cloud-Based Controller are different concepts. On-Premises Controllers and Integrated Gateways, including the Omada Fusion Series, can support Cloud Access, but their controller services still run on customer-side devices or infrastructure. With Omada Cloud Standard or Omada Cloud Essentials, the controller service itself is hosted in the Omada cloud.
3. Choosing the Right Omada Controller
After understanding the three management architectures, select a specific solution based on the required level of local control, available IT infrastructure, management scale, multi-site or multi-customer needs, feature requirements, deployment complexity, and budget.
3.1 Omada Cloud Standard
Choose Omada Cloud Standard when you need comprehensive cloud-hosted management for medium or large, geographically distributed, or multi-customer environments without deploying local controller infrastructure. It supports MSP Mode and integrated VMS capabilities, making it suitable for enterprises and service providers that require centralized management of compatible networking and surveillance devices. Device license fees and reliable internet connectivity for management should be included in the deployment plan.
3.2 Omada Cloud Essentials
Choose Omada Cloud Essentials when you need a free, simple cloud-hosted solution for centralized management and the deployment only requires essential functions. It is suitable for smaller or less complex networking and surveillance environments where ease of setup is more important than advanced functions or MSP Mode. It supports integrated VMS capabilities but does not support MSP Mode.
3.3 Omada Software Controller
Choose Omada Software Controller when you want to host the controller on your own server, virtual machine, or private cloud and retain control over the controller environment. Because the host resources can be planned according to the deployment, it is well suited to medium and large networks, multi-site environments, and service providers managing multiple customer networks through MSP Mode. The organization must provide and maintain the host system, controller availability, upgrades, backups, and security.
3.4 Omada Hardware Controller
Choose an Omada Hardware Controller when you want a dedicated, ready-to-use on-premises controller without installing controller software on a separate server or keeping a PC running. It is suitable for organizations that value local control, offline manageability, and straightforward deployment. Select the controller model according to the recommended number of managed devices and the expected future growth of the network.
3.5 Omada Fusion Series
Choose an Omada Fusion Gateway when you want an all-in-one solution that places the gateway and built-in controller at the center of the Omada networking ecosystem. Fusion Gateways provide license-free cloud management, simplified deployment, centralized management, and SD-WAN for connecting and managing distributed locations. Their built-in controller offers a larger managed-device capacity than ER7212PC, making the series better suited to small and medium-sized businesses with greater network scale or performance requirements. Fusion Pro models also integrate a video management system (VMS) for unified networking and surveillance management. Each Fusion Gateway manages only the devices within its own local system and does not support multi-site management. However, you can still centrally access and manage multiple Fusion Gateway systems through the Omada cloud platform.
3.6 ER7212PC
Choose ER7212PC for compact, small-scale deployments where an integrated 3‑in‑1 Gigabit VPN gateway (gateway + controller + PoE switch) can reduce hardware complexity. It supports centralized cloud management via Cloud Access, but its controller scale is notably smaller than the Fusion Series. For capacity planning, ER7212PC V2 supports up to 22 switches and EAPs total, and can manage two gateways total (including itself)—allowing it to adopt one additional Omada gateway for a small dual-site setup. ER7212PC does not support SD‑WAN or integrate a video management system (VMS), so it’s best suited to networks whose feature needs and managed-device scale stay within these limits.
Conclusion
